Preparing a UK Business for Cyber Essentials

A practical, step-by-step guide to locking down your Microsoft 365 tenant and passing the Cyber Essentials audit without friction.

Achieving Cyber Essentials certification in the UK is no longer just a "nice to have" badge for your website—it is becoming a hard requirement for winning government contracts, partnering with larger enterprises, and securing affordable cyber insurance.

However, many small to medium businesses fail their first audit not because their infrastructure is inherently flawed, but because they haven't formalized their security postures within Microsoft 365.

1. Enforce Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

The number one reason businesses fail Cyber Essentials is a lack of universal MFA. This does not mean "most staff use it." It means every single account, including administrative accounts and shared mailboxes, must be protected.

  • Disable legacy authentication protocols entirely in your Azure AD conditional access policies.
  • Ensure Microsoft Authenticator is the default method, moving away from SMS codes which are vulnerable to SIM-swapping.
"Security is not a product, but a process. However, enforcing MFA is the closest thing to a magic bullet for modern identity defense."

2. Device Management & Endpoint Protection

If staff are accessing company data from personal laptops or unmanaged mobile phones (BYOD), you have a massive compliance gap. Cyber Essentials requires you to know exactly what devices are accessing your data, and ensuring those devices are updated and secure.

You need to implement Microsoft Intune. This allows you to:

  • Force BitLocker encryption on all Windows devices.
  • Ensure devices are running a supported OS version (Windows 11 / latest macOS).
  • Automatically deploy critical security updates within 14 days of release.

3. The Principle of Least Privilege

Not everyone needs Global Admin rights. In fact, almost nobody does. Audit your Microsoft 365 tenant and strip administrative privileges from daily driver accounts. If you need admin rights, create a separate, dedicated admin account (e.g., [email protected]) that requires strong MFA and is only used when strictly necessary.
